STOER (‘TOUGH’)

The art installation 'STOER' by Bilal Chahal reflects on gender and gender related issues in a subtle and humorous way. The goal of this installation is to raise awareness regarding these topics. In our current complex society with ditto problems, Chahal sees the importance of acceptance concerning gender and identity in general. From this view point, he has created this clear and distinct work of art.
The shape of the letters and the colour -Barbie-pink- can raise questions, such as what does STOER (‘tough’) actually mean, who or what is STOER (‘tough’), and do people still experience differences in what is regarded as typical male or female. It also draws attention to the overall aspect: how do we all identify ourselves.

De kunstinstallatie ‘STOER’ van Bilal Chahal belicht op een subtiele en humorvolle wijze het onderwerp gender en alles wat daarmee samenhangt. Het doel van het kunstwerk is om bewustzijn te creëren aangaande deze onderwerpen. In de huidige complexe tijd, met dito vraagstukken ziet Chahal de importantie van acceptatie aangaande gender en identiteit. Vanuit dit uitgangspunt heeft
Bilal daarom dit heldere en duidelijke kunstwerk gecreëerd. Door het spel van letters, de gekozen kleur -Barbie-roze- en de vorm zal het vragen oproepen zoals
wat betekent stoer eigenlijk, wie of wat is stoer, voelt men nog een verschil in wat als typische mannelijk of vrouwelijk wordt ervaren. Tevens vraagt het aandacht voor het overkoepelend aspect:
op welke wijze identificeert een ieder zich.
